What is your favorite Christmas movie or TV special?
The Nightmare Before Christmas! Some say it’s a Halloween movie, but in the Sweeney house, it only comes out at Christmas Time!

Does your family have a special or quirky Christmas tradition?
We are just starting our traditions (my husband and I have a one year old), but I remember growing up Santa would always write me a letter and leave it on our fireplace so I could read it Christmas morning. It always amazed me that he knew such specific details about my life from the past year. He really is always watching!

Which do you prefer: to give or receive?
I love to give. Especially when you have looked far and wide for that perfect gift for someone. I get so excited to see the look on their faces when they open that gift and it’s tailored to them!

Do you do your Christmas shopping early or leave it to the last minute?
I’m an early shopper! I can’t help it! It gets so crazy at Christmas time. I know I have to have my shopping done by the middle of December or it doesn’t have a hope!

In which city do you watch your local Santa Claus parade?
We watch in Edmonton, Alberta.

Do you still send Christmas cards?
YES! I do believe it’s a dying tradition, but I love it. Nothing beats writing a short special message to those that you love. Plus, I’m a mail geek.

Which do you prefer: real or fake Christmas trees?
I’ve always had a fake Christmas tree but this is the very first year my husband Bobby has convinced me to get a real one. He says we will never go back….we will see.

Do you consider yourself good at wrapping presents?
Yes! I’m a nerd that gets all into it with a matching ribbon and bow too. I usually set aside one night to wrap all the gifts and it is hours of mayhem and mess and sparkles. Ha!

Ugly Christmas Sweaters: Not a Chance – or – The Uglier the Better?
I like “Cute” ugly Christmas sweaters. If they light up it’s even better!

What do you want Santa to bring you this year?
I would love a weekend away in the mountains with my family. We are lucky in Edmonton that we are only four hours away. My husband works out of town so when he is home, we often are visiting family and friends. But, a weekend to the mountains just us three would be lovely.

CISN COUNTRY 103.9 has an incredible Christmas Initiative called “Christmas Wish“. Listeners submit their wishes to CISN and quite often they grant them! It can be as simple as a Spa Day to thank mom for all that she does, or as specific as a new roof for someone that cannot afford one. Just last week, they granted a wish for a man to see his brother who he had not seen in 20 years (his brother was very sick). You can enter your wish at www.cisnfm.com

Christmas Board Games – Quality Family Time

In December of 2013, parts of Canada and the United States experienced a brutal ice storm that caused a massive power outage. My house was without power from Saturday evening to Tuesday morning, which is lucky because some Torontonians were without power for up to two weeks.

Christmas board gameWe tried to make the most of our time without heat, hydro and Netflix by playing Christmas board games by candlelight. My husband and I play A Christmas Story Yahtzee every Sunday, while listening to CBC Music’s Country Classics stream, so it was an easy transition. We invited friends over to play games too, not just for the company, but for the extra body heat.

Christmas board gameOnce the lights come back on, Christmastime is still a great opportunity to play board games. Luckily, companies like Hasbro have combined the love of Christmas, with the love of board games with themes for classic games such as Nightmare Before Christmas Trivial Pursuit, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Operation, and A Christmas Story Monopoly.

If your family is a bit more competitive, you might want to play card games like euchre, poker, or rummy. You can still add of a dash of Christmas with playing cards featuring Peanuts, Christmas Vacation, Elf and Coca-Cola Santa.

Christmas board gameSometimes there are family members who are too young to play a full Christmas board game, but they can help trim the tree with Hasbro ornaments with Candy Land, Twister, Operation, and Monopoly.

So let the Christmas board games begin! May the best family man win!

Home Alone – Where Are They Now?

On November 16, 1990 a new Christmas movie, which would go on to spawn four sequels, was released to massive success. Written by John Hughes and directed by Chris Columbus, Home Alone told the story of young Kevin McCallister who had to defend his home from blundering thieves after a family feud left him home alone at Christmas.

After 25 years, Home Alone is still considered one of the best Christmas movies of all time. But what are the stars of Home Alone up to now?

Macaulay Culkin was a very successful child actor with many notable movie credits including the role of Kevin McCallister in Home Alone and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, Uncle Buck and My Girl until he retired from acting at age 14. In 2014 he founded The Pizza Underground, a New York-based band who re-work Velvet Underground songs into odes about pizza. The Pizza Underground toured North America that year, with two stops in Toronto at NXNE and Atomic Lollipop at the Ontario Science Centre.

Catherine O’Hara, who played Culkin’s mother in the Home Alone franchise, is currently starring in CBC’s hit show Schitt’s Creek. O’Hara also voiced Sally in The Nightmare Before Christmas, solidifying her spot in the Christmas Movie Hall of Fame, you know, in addition to Canada’s Walk of Fame.

The late, great John Candy had a small but crucial part in Home Alone as Gus Polinski, the Polka King of the Midwest, who gives Catherine O’Hara’s character a ride home. John Candy’s legacy lives on in our hearts and on our screens, but also in the newly opened John Candy Box Theatre at the Second City Training Centre in Toronto.

The Wet Bandits - Home Alone
The Wet Bandits (Daniel Stern and Joe Pesci)

The Wet Bandits, played by Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern, were a not-so-dynamic duo who were outsmarted and overwhelmed by Kevin McCallister in Home Alone and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. Joe Pesci has not been acting in recent years – when you take a paint can to the face you deserve a break! – but he recently voiced Mosquito in the animated feature Savva, Heart of the Warrior. Daniel Stern, who played Marv, has had numerous roles on television in recent years, and in 2012 played The Old Man in A Christmas Story 2, which was filmed in Vancouver.

Thankfully, we can relive the hilarity of Home Alone on Netflix, Shomi, or the original VHS that’s still kicking around!
