Five Favourites at the Toronto Christmas Market

Now in it’s eighth year, the Toronto Christmas Market has become a treasured annual tradition for Torontonians and visitors from across Ontario and the United States. We have had a booth at the Toronto Christmas Market each year since it began, and have watched this wonderful event grow each year.

The Toronto Christmas Market returns to the Distillery District November 16 – December 23, 2017! Since we have spent so much time there, we thought we should share our favourite things about the Toronto Christmas Market!

The Massive Christmas Tree

Each year Forests Ontario and Ontario Wood find the perfect Christmas tree for the Distillery District. It stands tall and proud over the Market, and becomes the backdrop for millions of selfies on Instagram.

Social Media Gift Guide

Although we are all mourning Vine, and remember the five seconds that Ello was cool, there are some people on our Christmas lists who know and love social media more than life itself. They Tweet, they Snap, they Pin – they do it all!

But what do you get for your friend, who has seen it all (online anyway)? Here are five savvy social media gift ideas:

Punctuation Ornaments

punctuation ornaments

Sometimes it can be difficult to get your message across in 140 characters and still be grammatically correct. These punctuation ornaments add some much needed structure to tree trimming and are approved by the grammar police!

#SorryNotSorry Santa
Maybe your friend had too much eggnog at the office Christmas party, or used a bit too many swear words in their latest Facebook status. Either way, this t-shirt will let everyone know the score!

Hashtag Ornament
#omg #noway #Blessed This ornament says it all. But Twitter followers not included.

Adult Mad Libs
A good social media manager knows that great ideas come from interactive brainstorming sessions. Give your colleague a copy of Adult Mad Lib to get those creative juices flowing!

Santa Unfriended Me Coffee Mug

If your friend has made their way onto the naughty list, maybe it’s best to tell them with a mug full of egg nog . . . this mug full of egg nog.

Tips for Stuffing Stockings

Christmas morning in my family is a ritual. It always goes the same way.

Someone (me) wakes up about an hour too early, and putters around the house not-so-quietly in order to wake everyone up. We put the coffee on and crack open the largest bottle of Bailey’s the liquor store sells. Then we start with our stockings.

Opening my stocking is my favourite part of Christmas, which is bitter sweet because it is the first stage of present time. The stocking is popping at the seams, full of sweet surprises and awesome necessities.

When I reached my adult years, I took on the responsibility of stuffing stockings. Stuffing my mom’s stocking for Christmas morning – don’t worry Santa, I got this – was stressful the first year because my mom is very good at stuffing stockings. I wanted to bring her as much joy as I get when I open my stocking. I quickly discovered making a list is the best way to plan.

Here is a Beginner’s Guide to Stuffing Stockings:

Chapstick
Everyone needs a good tube of Chapstick or lip balm to get through winter. We are a Lip Smackers family, but they can be difficult to find in Canada now!

Gift Card
Tim Hortons. iTunes. Shoppers Drugmart. A gift card is a great stocking stuffer because they are easier to fit in a stocking than an XL double double.

CD
If you have a family member who doesn’t know what an iTune is, popping a good ol’ CD in their stocking works just as well. This is a good chance to throw in a new Christmas album, like A Jann Arden Christmas, or a top seller like Adele’s 25.

Clementine
Every year my family would go to the children’s Christmas party at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 160. My Uncle would sit in for Santa, and my Grandma would give out small stockings for all the kids. It always had a cane cane, a small toy and a clementine in the toe of the stocking.

Lotto Ticket
Every stocking must have lottery scratch ticket. If you win big, you can take the whole family on a long Christmas vacation – somewhere warm!

Chocolate
You must supply them with something to eat with their Bailey’s and coffee on Christmas morning!

Tooth Brush
You must supply them with something to clean their teeth after having chocolate and coffee for breakfast on Christmas morning!

A Big Thing
Stuffing a stocking may seem simple, but they are always bigger than you think they are! It is wonderful to pack a stocking with small treasures, but remember to stuff the stocking with a Big Thing like a Big Grinch to help fill it out!

Gag Gift
Stockings are great opportunity for a gag gift. A bag of Snowman Poop hidden among festive treasures is good for a laugh!

Candy Cane
A beautiful candy cane hooked on the top of a stocking is the perfect Pièce de résistance to the fireplace mantle on Christmas morning. Plus, they can use it to stir their hot chocolate!

Once the stockings have been stuffed, and hung by the fireplace, all you need to do is wait!

I Heart XMAS! with Anthony Farnell

Welcome to the I Heart XMAS Q&A, where Retro Festive asks notable Canadians about their own Christmas traditions and what they would like to find under the tree!

Anthony Farnell, Chief Meteorologist for Global News Toronto

Retro Festive: What is your favourite Christmas movie or TV special?
Anthony Farnell: My favourite Christmas movie has become Four Christmases because Vince Vaughan is hilarious.

Anthony Farnell christmas
Four Christmases is Anthony Farnell’s favourite Christmas movie!

Does your family have a special or quirky Christmas tradition?
My family meets every Christmas at our warm cozy cottage in Vermont. We open gifts, have brunch and sometimes hit the slopes in the afternoon.

Which do you prefer: to give or receive?
If I’m shopping last minute (which I normally do) then I’d much prefer to receive.  I’ve been slowly learning to put thought into gifts!

Ugly Christmas Sweaters: Not a Chance – or – The Uglier the Better?
Of course, the uglier the sweater the better.

What do you want Santa to bring you this year?
Call me a nerd but I’m hoping Santa delivers a home weather station to put up on my roof.  Storm (my dog) is looking for treats and a squeaky toy so I think at least one of us won’t be disappointed this year.

Chief Meteorologist Anthony Farnell will present his nightly weather report from Toy Drive Live this year.  Global News teams up with the Toronto Fire Fighters every year to support the Firefighters Toy Drive. This annual event will be broadcast live on Global News at 5:30pm from the Shops on Don Mills on Thursday, December 4.
